History:
A baby boy was born in the English countryside on September 26, 1961. He never knew the mother that abandoned him, nor the father that abandoned her. The only childhood home that the boy ever knew was an orphanage, where they named Roger Smith.
Like many a young lad, Smith developed an imaginary 'other life', a person he'd rather be. A thief who could get away with anything. Like Macavity out of the poem by T.S. Eliot.
At the age of 15, he ran away from the orphanage to fulfill his dreams in the big city. He left behind the orphanage, and anyone who might know him as Roger Smith. From that day forward, Felix Macavity was his name.
He started out as a pickpocket. Eventually, on a dare and an adventurous whim, he moved up into burglary. He found he had a natural knack.
One day, when he was about 18 years old, one of his regular fences told him about a possible high-paying job. Seemed someone wanted a certain painting taken from the fifth floor of a certain museum. Macavity took it.
It started out smoothly. What he missed, though, was the surveillance cameras. While he was busy pinching the painting, the guard in the security room was setting off the silent alarm... and before Macavity had time to make his escape, all exits were cut off, save for the roof.
But once he was up, there was no way down. No fire exits, and the police were starting to arrive. He tried climbing down the back of the museum, into an unlit alleyway, but there weren't any good handholds. He slipped.
After several seconds of hovering in the air with his eyes shut, Macavity realized that he wasn't dead. A few more falls-and-sudden-stops later, and he was on the ground. Once he was on his feet, he didn't bother waiting around to figure out what had just happened. He ran. And the next day, he collected quite a decent fee for the acquisition of the painting.
So, Macavity took more high-profile jobs, and when he'd saved up enough, he bought himself a legal identity, and a posh flat in the city. He started visiting expensive clubs, and learning how the high-class folks lived. Officially, he claimed to be a business consultant. Unofficially, though, his business was arranging deals for anyone wishing to hire a 'professional thief'. Not even his clients knew that he himself was the burglar being hired. He called the culprit the 'Hidden Hand', and it was to this mysterious figure that his deeds were attributed.
By the time he was 30, he had enough money to join that ultimate in rich circles, London's Hellfire Club. This, though, brought complications of another sort. Macavity was now a High Profile Personage. This meant that, before pulling any crime, he'd have to prepare a bulletproof alibi... and maybe one or two to spare.
For another decade, he delighted in confounding law enforcement agencies throughout England, and even in mainland Europe, with his criminal doings. In early 2001, however, he got an assignment to steal some very valuable microchips from an American company. It was his first trip to America... and when he got there, he found it to be a delightfully corrupt country. A wonderful place for a thief and scoundrel of his caliber. And once his job was complete, he returned to New York to settle in for a while.
