History:
The memories of Torne's early childhood are shrouded by the everyday torment of his parents constant fighting. His father was the type of man who was simply never satisfied, as if he derived some strange pleasure from being angry at the world. For many years Tor tried to measure up, but the goal was always set a level too high. If he got B's on his report card, they should have been A's, A's should have been honors. But it was more than just disappointment his father showed, it was judgment. The boy would amount to nothing, he never worked hard enough or used common sense.
After some time, Torne learned to ignore the badgering. He became rebellious to the point that anything his father disliked, Tor made it a point to do. To his mother he shared his dreams and how he knew in his heart that he would be something great. Her way was quiet approval and that was enough for the boy. But this caused an even greater rift in the views between his parents leading to even more fierce fighting.
A few months ago, Torne arrived home hours late from a party with his friends. His father reacted to the breaking of curfew explosively. As the fight between father and son escalated, Tor's mother stepped in to try and break up the two before it became physical and was struck by the hand of her husband for the interference.
Watching his mother stumble back and the tears in her eyes made something inside Tor awaken and his fury rupture. His vision became clouded and then full of these tiny elements moving. He could feel them bouncing off of his skin and enter, then exit his lungs. After a few moments, that intense feeling faded and although he could no longer see them, he was still aware of the particles of air all around him.
His darkened gaze cast toward his father then and from the boy's will, all of the air surrounding the man began to draw back, leaving none of the life-giving substance left to breathe. The man clutched his throat and dropped to the ground, choking, dying. Just as suddenly as it had been gone, it was back again. Torne looked down at the gasping man and scowled. "If you ever hurt me or my mother again, I will kill you."
Over the next couple of months, things had changed in Tor's household. The boy was more confident than ever. As his father had made several claims that the powers his son now possessed were terrible and freakish, the more Torne made the effort to learn about, control and love his new strength. The man who had caused his family so much grief was but a minor annoyance now, because he knew Tor's threat was real.
On the last night of the Symposium which was supposed to determine the reality of mutants, Torne was settled in front of the TV, watching with moderate interest. He listened to the scientists, angered by a few. Then he watched as a man rose from the crowd and spoke,
"For the moment, I would like to address the world. I am a mutant. Some may think of us a twist in the genetic code. Others may call us angels, demons, freaks. But one thing you will not be able to do for much longer is deny us. We exist. We are the shape of humanity to come. And we will not be denied, we will not be dismissed, and we will not be ignored. You WILL deal with the reality of our existence, for there are more of us than you think."
The boy's eyes gleamed and he spoke the name after it was given to the world, "Magneto..." Just from watching him there, Torne felt this was a great man. Someone filled with pride and courage and great strength. He watched the rest of the program on the edge of his seat, taking in every word of the powerful figure and most especially, his last words.
"But to those of my kind watching...do not let them treat you like something less than human. You are more than human. Whether you join my cause or not, remember at least that."
The next day Torne began his search to try and find this man, Magneto, and join his cause. Where ever he goes now, Tor is not afraid to tell the world who and what he is and encourages others to feel pride instead of shame and define for themselves the person that they are.
